This month as part of the Your Gallery 3 series, we would like to thank writer and curator Pádraic E. Moore for contributing to the series via Twitter, suggesting that we look back at the 2001 exhibition of photographs by the artist Francesca Woodman (1958-1981). Kalachakra Sand Mandala
This month as part of our Your Gallery 3 series we would like to thank artist @nerosunero and the individual(s) behind the twitter account @coffeedoq for contributing to the series. Both wanted to look back at the exhibition Kalachakra Sand Mandala, which took place in 1994. In response, we have created this page compiling a brief description of the exhibition, as well as some images of the installation and engagement programme. We have also linked some of the reviews from the time by Mary Russell, and a joint review of the exhibition by artists Gerard Byrne and Ronan McCrea.
One of the most popular shows in the Gallery’s history, it attracted over 26,000 visitors over three weeks. A fascinating documentary was made at the time, entitled Kalachakra – The Wheel of Time. Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland and produced by Bear Foot Productions, it wonderfully documents the atmosphere at the Gallery and also touches on the conceptual elements behind it and its contextualisation within the overall exhibition programme.
We are delighted to have the opportunity to share this documentary over the next two weeks. It is available to view on this page, from the image link below, until August 27, 2020. We would like to thank Bear Foot Productions for granting permission to share the documentary. We also warmly thank the IFI Irish Film Archive for facilitating its digitisation and allowing access to their magnificent resources.
We welcome you to suggest what you might like to see from us during this time. More than ever, we want to give voice to our audience and as such we have designed this section of our programming for you. If you would like to suggest your favourite exhibition, artwork or artists that you remember from the DHG archive, please email our Learning and Engagement Curator, Fernando Sanchez.
