After the major critical and box-office success of his 1972 thriller Deliverance, director John Boorman was given free reign on Zardoz, his subsequent personal project, which he also wrote and produced. Starring Sean Connery and Charlotte Rampling, it is an extraordinary example of a post apocalyptic sci-fi odyssey. After receiving wildly mixed reviews on its initial release, it has since attained a cult following.
